Olivet Students Get a Taste of Parliamentary Procedure

The Center-sponsored Law and Politics Society recently held a workshop called “Pizza and Parliamentary Procedure” with guest speaker Rev. Reuben L. Lillie. Rev. Lillie is a vocal professor at Olivet and the founder of The Loop Church of the Nazarene in Chicago. At the event, students learned how to properly hold a meeting using parliamentary procedure. Parliamentary procedure is used in many schools, churches, and other formal meeting groups. The event was lecture-based, but provided a fun and interactive way to learn the fundamentals of parliamentary procedure.

When asked about the validity of the tactics learned at this event Lillie said, “Everyone will have to conduct a meeting at least once in their life. It is important to be equipped with the proper tools in order to be effective and efficient.” While few will have to use parliamentary procedure in their vocation, everyone can benefit from learning how to run an orderly meeting.

The event was well attended, with about 30 students present for Rev. Lillie’s lecture. Mock proposals were given and cabinet members of the Law and Politics Society were “elected” chairpersons. Overall, Pizza and Parliamentary Procedure was a success and a wonderful opportunity for students aspiring to be future public leaders!

The Center is proud to support activities such as this which promote civic engagement and celebrate the acquisition of new skills.
